Open Source and Microsoft ????

on August 8, 2009
Its strange but it’s true. Microsoft has managed to contribute to the evolution of Linux OS. Microsoft has given a code of around 20000 lines to the Linux OS. Microsoft is among the 100 corporations around the world which are directly contributing to the source code of Linux.

The code is actually device driver code for the Linux OS. And even more significant is that the code is released under GPLv2 license which is Linux communities preferred license.

Of course the device drivers set up to be integrated in the Linux core ultimately benefit Microsoft customers. The drivers could be accessed by the Linux community and customers, and would boost the performance of the Linux platform in scenarios in which the open-source operating system was virtualized on top of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V or Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V.
